Surgery Type: Breast Lift
After Photos Taken At: 6 weeks
Description: 35 year old female wearing a 34 DD weighing 125 lbs. Patient presented requesting a breast lift as well as liposuction. She has had loss of breast volume with breast feeding and feels her nipple location is too low as well. She also has trouble fitting into bras due to the shape and size of her breasts.

As we age and the skin loses its elasticity, breasts often begin to sag – altering both their shape and firmness. Factors such as weight loss, pregnancy, nursing, and gravity all take their toll on a woman’s breasts.

Mastopexy is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape the breasts. Although it is often done alone, if your breasts are smaller than you would like, breast implants can be inserted in conjunction with mastopexy to increase their overall size and/or restore upper fullness. Alternatively, a reduction in size is also possible if desired.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Mastopexy can take anywhere from one to three hours depending on your starting point. During the procedure, breast skin is removed to create a natural “bra” designed to improve your shape. Some methods involve mainly repositioning of the nipple-areola which can be done entirely through a peri-areaolar incision and others include significant lifting of the entire breast, requiring additional incisions.

Dr. Burnett will work with you to determine the best approach for your breast lift. This will take into account your desired size and shape, the appropriate amount of areolar lifting, as well as the placement of the resulting scars. She will then create an incision that outlines the area from which breast skin will be removed and that will define the new location for the nipple. When the excess skin has been removed, the breast tissue is moved to the higher position. The nipple and areola are not detached from the breast tissue – they move upward with it. This allows preservation of sensation in most cases.

Breast implants may be part of the surgical plan if you desire more fullness of the upper breast or a significant increase overall. Implants may also reduce the extent of scarring in some cases.

RECOVERY

After surgery, your breasts will be swollen and uncomfortable for a few days. You will wear a front close sports bra, except while showering, for one month.

The swelling immediately following surgery often results in some changes in sensation of your nipples. This usually returns to normal as the swelling subsides and healing progresses. In rare cases it may be permanent.

The stitches will be covered by surgical tape that will stay on until the sutures are removed or dissolve. You do not need to do anything to take care of the incisions.
